April 15th
Hello 2nd grade families. Yesterday the Governor made it official, we will not be physically back in the classroom this school year. While I am extremely sad about this, I am glad that we are doing what we need to do in order to stay healthy and safe. That being said, I will need feedback from you to know what you need to help this be as painless as possible. I know a familiar format is nice to know what to expect each day, but I also know that my own 2 kids are experiencing some burn out right now with online learning. I will continue to have a mix of online and in book assignments, but I also want to add more fun! Some ideas I have are listed below, but I welcome your input because you are on the frontlines now and know what will help your family get through this.
1. Digital Breakout links (maybe on a tab on this website?) 2. Silly face competition (submit a photo, class votes) 3. Daily times to check in with me, some days morning, others evening (maybe specific days to talk about math, writing, etc. too) 4. Virtual Dance Festival-everyone learns a dance (probably from GoNoodle) and records themselves doing it, or at least a part of it. 5. Virtual Learning Fair-videos and photos of our science experiments 6. Read-aloud videos once a week, live 7. One-on-one video conferences to address your specific needs 8. Read aloud times with aides Also, moving forward, the most important thing is going to be supporting your student emotionally and academically. If they were already behind in Math or Reading, they will need to continue to work to fill in those gaps. iReady and Lexia are the 2 best tools to be using right now. The green lessons in iReady are geared specifically for the needs of each individual student. Likewise, Lexia is geared for the concept deficiencies each individual student has in reading. If I can only pick 2 things to do everyday, iReady and Lexia would be it. So if it is a struggle to get your student to do work, or they are having emotional reactions, focus on iReady and Lexia, and let the rest go, or just do what you can. Reading together, practicing math facts, having fun together...those are the important things right now. As always, please reach out if you ever need anything, and please let me know what you need from me moving forward. The aides will be calling you, let them know what you need from me if you don't have the time or desire to write me an email or Dojo message. I'm here for you and your family. Now, on to more FUN THINGS! Today's question... Do you have a favorite song, singer, or band? Who or what is it, and why do you like them? I absolutely love Christina Perri. I think her voice is beautiful and she sings so many songs that help me feel good inside or cheer me up when I'm feeling down. One of my favorites is "A Thousand Years". Tomorrow I will list all of the songs or singers you love and let you and your parents decide if you want to check any of them out. For Math today, please complete the Chapter 10 test, pages 493-496. When you finish, have your parents send me pictures of your pages. I still have to give grades this term, and I need to know what you understand so I know if I can move on to the next concept, or if I need to review, make some videos, or assign some lessons to help you understand it better. On Wednesdays we usually have Computers with Mrs. Thueson. Please visit the Computers class website for the activities she has planned for 2nd grade this week. https://sites.google.com/a/alpinedistrict.org/cedarvalleycomputers/home/grade-2 We also usually have PE with Mrs. Shanks. Mrs. Cherry has given me some NEW ideas for PE that I am sharing here for you. Also, don't forget about GoNoodle...they get you moving too! There's a link below! All of the activities should be approved by parents before beginning!
